This article explores how citizens respond to ruptures and problems in the places they inhabit by enacting adaptive improvised incremental urban infrastructure patching. might relate deciding undertake small scale interventions their communities develop solutions that are being overlooked local government; or it involve a community response an ongoing systemic place-based problem formal agencies involved managing change not addressing. paper develops concept of patching with reference conceptual debates informed research undertaken Birmingham, UK. Drawing upon observations, interviews, collective art projects, citizen-led is identified as important intervention process emerges tensions between professional policymakers’ ostensive views place lived experiences inhabitants.
